Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to express my deep concern regarding BC Ferries’ decision to have vessels constructed in China. As a resident of British Columbia, I believe this practice is detrimental to the long-term economic health of our province and undermines the skilled workforce within our shipbuilding industry.
While I understand the potential for cost savings that may be achieved through overseas construction, I strongly believe that prioritizing local job creation and supporting Canadian businesses should be paramount. Investing in BC’s shipbuilding capabilities not only ensures quality construction and compliance with stringent Canadian standards, but also fosters economic growth, strengthens our communities, and retains valuable expertise within our province/country.
The use of taxpayer dollars to fund BC Ferries should directly benefit Canadians. Directing shipbuilding contracts to international companies, particularly in countries with differing labour standards and environmental regulations, raises ethical concerns and fails to maximize the potential economic impact of this significant investment within our own communities.
I urge you to reconsider BC Ferries’ policy of utilizing foreign shipyards and to prioritize contracting with Canadian companies for future vessel construction and maintenance projects. I believe that supporting our local shipbuilding industry is a sound investment in BC’s future and will ultimately provide greater long-term benefits for our province.
Thank you for your time and consideration of this important matter.
Sincerely,
Your name
